The Generator Types: SON 28, SONdelux and SON 29 S

SON hub dynamos use different generator types. Learn more here about the exact differences between them.

SON 28 – The all-purpose dynamo
The SON 28 is optimised for high power output across the full range of speeds. It provides sufficient power for lights or charging devices, even at lower riding speeds. For most applications, SON 28 is the best choice.

Advantages: Optimal performance across all speed ranges
Advantages: Wide range of versions available

SONdelux – The lightweight dynamo for fast riders
he SONdelux has a slightly flatter power curve, meaning it requires a somewhat higher speed to deliver the same voltage/power as the SON 28. It is well suited for fast riders and applications where low weight is more important than high power output.

Advantages: Especially light and low mechanical resistance
Advantages: Optimised for high-speed riding and use in small wheels
Disadvantages: Lower power output at speeds below 20 km/h

SON 29 S – The slim dynamo for maximum power
The housing of the SON 29 S is extremely slim and narrow, making it visually unobtrusive. Its generator is slightly more powerful than the
SON 28 generator. As such, the SON 29 S is primarily a design choice and beneficial when maximum output at low speed is required.

Advantages: Optimised for a slim design and modern straight-pull lacing
Advantages: Slightly higher output than SON 28, especially advantageous at low speeds
Disadvantages: The high output may be disadvantageous at very high speeds, depending on the setup

The diagram shows thedifferent power output characteristics of the three dynamo types. When using high-performance charging electronics (e.g. Ladelux), significantly more power can be drawn than with lighting alone. However, the high power output of the SON 29 S at high speeds can, depending on the setup and application, can cause slight vibration effects.
